there didn't seem to be anything all that extraordinary about alice tabora, and she liked it that way, thank you very much. too much attention was a death sentence in her mind.
ever since that fateful afternoon when her father caught her healing the injuries of her younger sisters, it has been nailed into her head that she needed to take extra care not to draw attention to herself. "there are people who will take you away if they find out about you. you don't want to be taken away, do you?" she didn't, but it wasn't as though she could control her gifts. the slightest touch was enough for her to absorb the injuries of those around her, leaving her with a patchwork of scars and marks on her body. puberty was hard enough without feeling like a freak of nature. this led to alice becoming more reserved through high school, and her stubborn shyness followed her all the way into her adult life. following graduation, she went off to uc boulder to study computer science. puzzles had always fascinated her. if she couldn't solve the puzzle behind her powers, but she could figure out every other one around her. programming made sense to her. there were so many things in her world that she couldn't figure out, but she could do this. she felt safer behind the screen anyway. her skill set allowed her to find back ends into government networks, and she could make sure she continued to stay invisible as far as her abilities were concerned. there were no files on her yet, and she needed it to stay that way. perhaps her quiet fixations and preference for solitude were holding her back, both personally and professionally, but for now she was safe. no one was coming to take her away. |
ETC likes: falling down wikipedia holes, solving project euler problems, unnecessarily complicated tabletop games, ted talks, drunk pinterest craft attempts, minimalism, tiny houses, thunderstorms dislikes: click bait, nosy people, when the radio seems to play the same five songs, being mistaken for tech support
